The Latest Developments in the Dr. Hadden Case

The Robert Hadden Case has gone on for more than a decade.

From the first arrest of the predator doctor to the first round of lawsuits, more and more of Hadden’s patients have come forward to share their stories.

By June 2022, over 200 of Hadden’s former patients filed suit against Columbia University and its affiliates.

With Hadden being convicted and awaiting sentencing in April 2023, more civil lawsuits are going forward against Columbia in line with the newly enacted Adult Survivor’s Act.

Columbia University OBGYN Convicted of Sexual Abuse

This new act allows victims of sexual abuse a “look back window” to file suit against their abusers and any parties responsible for allowing the abuse to happen.

The window to file suit commenced on November 24, 2022 and expires on November 23, 2023.

Previously, many of Robert Hadden’s victims were unable to file suit due to the statute of limitations for sex crimes in New York State.

Now, the Adult Survivor’s Act opens up a new path to securing compensation for a countless number of women.

Columbia University Harbored a Known Sex Criminal in Robert Hadden

Based on the testimonies of victims, investigations by our law firm, and court findings, Columbia University enabled Robert Hadden to sexually abuse his patients and actively worked to cover-up what was happening for over two decades.

Columbia University Enabled Robert Hadden Sexual Abuse

At the DiPietro Law Firm, we believe that these cases of sexual abuse could not have lasted so long without the complicit actions of a powerful institution.

There have been many documented cases of sexual abuse being enabled by institutions in New York and all across the country, and Columbia University is just one example.

Robert Hadden spent over 20 years sexually abusing patients.

Without institutions covering up his actions and providing him the privacy and power he wanted, Hadden wouldn’t have been able to sexually abuse patients for decades unsupervised.

To this day, Columbia has not notified 6,000-8,000 women that Hadden was stripped of his medical license for sexual abuse.

Columbia University, Robert Hadden Sexual Abuse Lawsuit

Our law firm and the wider public knows that Columbia University and the hospitals affiliated with it were complicit in Robert Hadden’s sexual violence.

These institutions must be held liable to the fullest extent for letting a predator operate in their medical offices.

By enabling Hadden to victimize female patients, Columbia University shares the blame.

If you were a victim of Hadden’s abuse, you are eligible to file a legal claim. Contact us for more information.

How Columbia University Covered Up Sexual Abuse with Settlements and NDAs

Uncovered by our law firm years ago, it has been known that Columbia University and its affiliates covered up multiple cases of unlawful sexual abuse committed by Robert Hadden.

The cover-ups were the result of careful planning by the university’s legal department.

How the university kept victims silent was with its “Catch and Kill Strategy.”

Here’s how the strategy worked:

Whenever a complaint against Robert Hadden surfaced, Columbia University wouldn’t call in law enforcement or report the doctor’s behavior to relevant authorities.

The university and its affiliated hospitals would also not encourage victims to go to the police.

Instead, Columbia University would direct victims to the university’s legal department.

There, victims would be offered financial settlements as reparation.

However, there would be strings attached.

The victims would only receive their settlements in exchange for keeping silent about their experiences with Robert Hadden.

Before agreeing to any settlement, victims had to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that barred them from coming forward to file lawsuits.

The Catch and Kill Strategy has proven effective in keeping victims quiet.

It also enabled Hadden to continue his abuse for decades.

If you or someone you know accepted an offer and signed Columbia University’s NDA, note that the NDA doesn’t mean that you can no longer file a lawsuit against Hadden and the institutions complicit in his sexual assault crimes.

The New York Adult Survivor's Act (ASA)

Many victims have yet to have their day in court for the trauma they suffered at Columbia University medical facilities.

Some victims may have accepted Columbia University’s settlement and fear the repercussions of breaching the NDA.

Many other victims fear that they have no right to file lawsuits.

Many victims don’t report their abuse immediately after it happened, and these victims may have suffered in silence for years before considering legal counsel and representation.

The statute of limitations previously barred civil action for sexual assaults that occurred more than five years prior to the filing date.

The only sexual crime that wasn’t barred by a statute of limitations was rape.

Luckily, all this changed in November 2022.

As of November 24, 2022, the New York Adult Survivors Act came into effect.

Under the Adult Survivors Act, victims of sexual assault can now file lawsuits regardless of the year in which the abuse took place.

As a result, Hadden’s victims from may now file their lawsuits and seek compensation.

The New York Adult Survivors Act also enables victims to sue the parties that allowed sex abuse to occur.

In other words, you can also file a lawsuit against Columbia University, Irving Medical Center, and the New York Presbyterian Hospital.
